Why stainless steel by the sea

On the seafront, painted and even galvanised steel eventually need maintenance. Stainless steel — locally called inox or prohrom — has no paint to peel: the protection is the material itself. That is why we suggest it for handrails, balcony and pool railings and anything people touch.

Not all stainless is equal, though. For parts directly exposed to salt spray we suggest a more resistant grade and careful weld finishing — brown "tea staining" usually appears on poor welds and scratches. The quote states what we install.

Welding stainless

We weld stainless with TIG, which gives clean, neat welds on thin tubes. Welds are then cleaned and polished so heat tint does not become a corrosion point. That is the difference between a railing that looks the same after five summers and one that browns after the first.

Stainless or painted steel?

If the property is further from the shore and the railing is large, galvanised and painted steel is often better value. Stainless makes sense where salt is constant, where the railing is touched and where you do not want repainting. We are happy to price both.
